The Windows 8.1 HelpPane can be used on Windows 10. This can allow for a proper Windows 7-like HelpPane (though the Windows 7 one does not work on Windows 10) and not the garbage metro help application or the browser (if the garbage metro help application is uninstalled). It also works well with DWM off and Classic Theme (though it may be inconsistent with the latter since it uses the metro design language). Here are the steps: 1. Get the Help Folder, HelpPane.exe, and HelpPane.exe.mui from the corresponding locale folder from Windows 8.1. All of these are in C:\Windows. 2. As TrustedInstaller, copy all of those files into C:\Windows on your Windows 10 install. 3. Run winhlp32.exe to test (if you did not replace it with the Windows XP one). This does not appear to work on Windows 11 (as it seems to crash). However, feel free to test further, since on my Windows 11 install it may be broken. Attachments:

You can also try some Windows 8 beta HelpPanes, as they will work too. The background is stored in msstyles from what I've been told.

Build 7989's HelpPane (which still contains Windows 7 icons) works on Windows 10. It is the oldest (x64) Windows HelpPane that works on Windows 10. 7973's (fbl_dnt3_wireless compile) HelpPane does not seem to work. Files are linked below since Windows 8 betas from archive.org take way too long to download. To "install", follow the same procedure from the first post but with the Build 7989 HelpPane instead. And msstyles does alter the appearance of the help dialog. The third image is the Build 7989 HelpPane on Windows 10 with a Windows 7 theme. Download

To fix Online Help, you should replace apds.dll with the Windows 8.1 Copy Discovered by Discord user: "schm1dtxbox" A weird quirk I discovered is that it seems that to switch the help type, you need to restart HelpPane after changing the option (This will crash 7989's helppane)

This doesn't work on 23H2 11. The process is launched in task manager, but theres absolutely no GUI or applet whatsoever.
